Actor Stellan Skarsgård’s days amongst Marvel superheroes like Thor and Iron Man is nearing its end. He has revealed that he has only one movie appearance left in his five-picture contract with Marvel and it’s not “Thor 3.”
Speaking to Den of Geek about his latest movie adaptation of John le Carré’s novel “Our Kind of Traitor,” Skarsgård said that he is slated, as per his contract, to only appear in one other Marvel movie. “I have a five-film deal with them, and they still have one option” he said.
Skarsgård also mentioned that he will not appear in “Thor 3.” “Thor 3 is not on my slate,” Skarsgård admitted, “but maybe the next Avengers.” The next “Avengers” movie is of course the two-part “Avengers: Infinity War,” directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. So, it is likely that he will appear in either of the parts.
Not much is known about “Thor: Ragnarok,” to be directed by Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi who recently directed the Sam Neill-starring comedy “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” There are unconfirmed rumours, however, that Asgard may be destroyed in the film, Thor’s hammer Mjolnir may be wrecked once and for all and Heimdall (Idris Elba) may be killed. Mark Ruffalo will also likely be playing a larger role in the film than in his previous Marvel outings.
According to Den of Geek, Thor will mostly spend his time in Asgard. So, it makes sense that Skarsgård does not appear in the film.
Skarsgård has already appeared in four Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, namely “Thor,” “The Avengers,” “Thor: The Dark World” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” He plays the brilliant Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics Dr. Erik Selvig at Culver University. He is also the teacher and mentor to Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and a friend of her father.
As noted by marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com, while working alongside Foster and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings), Erik Selvig encountered Thor (Chris Hemsworth) who had been freshly banished by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) from Asgard. Thereafter, Selvig was recruited as a consultant for S.H.I.E.L.D. When Thor’s brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) invaded Earth, Selvig was put under mind control which temporarily damaged his mind and gave him a mental breakdown. When he recovered, he worked with Thor once again during the war against Ultron and was recruited to work at the New Avengers Facility.
