Mel Gibson revealed that he was approached to play Odin to Chris Hemsworth in the “Thor” series. Despite declining the role, is there a fair chance that the actor could be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? Is he joining the cast of the 2017 Spidey flick?
Mel Gibson would have made a fine Odin to Chris Hemsworth’s “Thor.” However, he did not accept the role that eventually went to Anthony Hopkins. But does he regret his decision? Will he ever join the MCU?
Movie Web informs that the actor recently spilled the beans that he was approached to be a part of MCU Phase 1 as Odin. He made this revelation in an interview with The Guardian. “Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor’s dad. But I didn’t do it,” said Gibson.
Anthony Hopkins agreed to play Odin and Slash Film believes that he did a fine job at it. It is now difficult to imagine anyone else playing the role. However, coming back to Gibson, the interview states that he is not opposed to superhero movies in general but he finds some of them really funny.
“Some are good. Some are kind of funny … ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ Or the first ‘Iron Man.’ And some of them are just like retreats. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times … There is a slight shift in film,” he said.
“But, then again, I think all films are suffering from people not being able to now open them with their name. It’s a different kind of business these days,” he added.
However, there is a possibility that Gibson might make it to MCU after all. It has been reported that Robert Downey Jr. is keen on getting Gibson on board to direct the next “Iron Man” installment. While things will take their course and time, Gibson seems to be happy right now with his World War II movie, “Hacksaw Ridge” with Andrew Garfield. He has directed it and it will hit the screens next year. He will also be seen next in “Blood Father” due later this year.
