Back in June 2014, 20th Century Fox announced their plans to revive the “Predator” franchise. Shane Black, who was attached as a director, said the new movie would be an “inventive sequel.” Black has recently dropped more hints regarding “The Predator” as it is being called now.
Whilst talking about his latest movie “The Nice Guys” starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe to Thrillist, Black said “The Predator” will be a large-scale event movie like “Iron Man 3.”
The first two “Predator” films and then Nimrod Antal’s “Predators” were all smaller-scaled movies. Black said that there is a need to expand upon the mythology of those earlier stories.
“I think the first one was great, and it was contained, and it was a perfect little gem for what it was. I think there’s an expansion that needs to take place, and also just a love for that era, that movie, and the mythology of the Predator. I think that they came to me knowing pretty much that … they [20th Century Fox] said, basically, if I wanted to make Predator but treat it like it was Iron Man III instead of just another little movie. I said, ‘Let’s really do it right this time,’” Black told Thrillist.
Black also talked about how he landed the gig to direct another installment of one of the most popular franchises from the 1980s that had of late faded into obscurity. “They called me and I was reluctant. I said, ‘Look. You guys at Fox, I mean, I enjoy these movies, but we’ve been churning out these AVP whatever, they each cost a certain amount of money, they’re okay, but there’s no effort to elevate them or make them any kind of an event.’ They’re just sort of another Predator.
‘Oh, there’s another one that came out.’ They said, ‘What if we said to you we want to reinvent this, and really treat it with as much of an event status, or as much hoopla as we would the Alien prequel, which is coming out also? We really want to make this something. The kind of movie that people line up for.’ I said, ‘Really, you’ll spend a bunch of money?’ They go, ‘Yep.’ I go, ‘Make it really scale spectacle?’ ‘Yep.’ ‘Sh*t, that sounds interesting,’” Black said.
Black also added in the interview that talks are on with Arnold Schwarzenegger to return as Major Alan ‘Dutch’ Schaefer from the original “Predator” directed by John McTiernan. It’s interesting to note that Shane Black himself had a small role in the film. He played Hawkins, the first victim of the Predator (Kevin Peter Hall). Regarding the script, Black said it is being kept a secret, for obvious reasons.
Early last year, producer John Davis praised Black’s vision for “The Predator.” He told Comingsoon.net “I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’”
“The Predator” will be released on March 2, 2018 in the US.
