‘Terminator Genisys’ Emilia Clarke Goes Romantic With ‘Hunger Games’ Sam Claflin in New Film

Following her turn as Sarah Connor in the not-so-successful “Terminator: Genisys,” a reboot of the famous sci-fi saga begun by James Cameron in 1984, Emilia Clarke, famous for playing Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO series “Game of Thrones,” will now star opposite “Hunger Games” actor Sam Claflin in a romantic comedy “Me Before You.” The trailer looks promising.

Based on the romantic novel of the same name by author Jojo Moyes, “Me Before You” tells the story of a young, recently jobless working class woman named Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke) who finds an opportunity to become a caregiver to a high profile but disabled quadriplegic man, Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), who has no desire to live any more. It is Louisa who is able to brighten up his spirits and both of them eventually end up falling in love with each other. However, the twist here, unlike most romantic comedies, is that Will decides to end his life with dignity in the end.

Emilia Clarke’s new role is a refreshing departure from her “Game of Thrones” or “Terminator: Genisys” characters, where she had to appear serious and in battle-mode all the time. Those characters were always struggling and are not known to smile much.

“Literally, Daenerys doesn’t smile, Sarah Connor doesn’t smile,” says Clarke. “But here it was like, ‘Can you smile more? Can you have a good time?’ I’m not trying to kill anyone, no one is trying to kill me. It’s fun,” Clarke said of her character, speaking to USA Today.

Clarke says she was emotionally moved by the novel while reading it on the set of “Terminator: Genisys” and convinced “Me Before You” director Thea Sharrock to give her the part of Louisa.

“Actors cannot invest too much in auditions. It’s too heartbreaking if you don’t get it,” says Clarke. “But this one I was like, ‘I’m doing it. I was madly into it. Every fiber of me felt like someone had written me down.”

She also added in the interview that her real life persona is more like Louisa, a regular girl. “It’s funny with these strong female roles,” says Clarke. “I’m really quite clumsy, say the wrong thing all the time and am awkward at the best of times. My friends and family have seen this other person every single day,” said the actress famous for playing the mother of dragons in “Game of Thrones.”

The Director Thea Sharrock also praised Claflin’s performance in the film, noting that it was a challenging role. “Sam literally plays the part with no movement below the neck. All he had really were facial movements.”

The film also stars Matthew Lewis, famous for playing the role of Neville Longbottom in the “Harry Potter” films, among others.

“Me Before You” opens in cinemas beginning April 7 this year. The trailer for the Warner Bros. film can be seen below.
