Sydney Shooting: 1 Dead, 2 Injured at Bankstown Shopping Centre

Sydney shooting

A man is shot dead and two other people were injured in a shooting at a busy  Bankstown shopping centre in south-west Sydney. Detectives are already investigating the Sydney shooting.

The dead man is identified as Walid “Wally” Ahmed. Ahmed is being linked to a fatal shooting at  a smash repair business in Condell Park this month. He was a well-known stand-over man and was already previously jailed for manslaughter.

It was reported that 8 shots were fired in the fatal shooting. A man and a woman were injured in the shooting; they are believed to be innocent bystander though this has not been confirmed yet, reported The Australian. The gunman is still at large and there is no arrest made till now.

News footage showed a body lying underneath a sheet while a woman and an older man were taken on stretchers to an ambulance.

A Bankstown shopping centre employee  who happens to live in the area told reporters that police tried to arrest some people. He said that a car was stopped and searched but they did not find any weapon; it turned out they got the wrong person.

He was quoted saying, “It happened in front of us. They handcuffed the wrong person.”

Another witness said, “I looked back and there was nothing, and then suddenly one lady came running and crying and saying ‘oh there’s a gunshot, there’s a gunshot’. And I just freaked out.”

She added, “I didn’t see any dead body or nothing. When I went inside [the shopping centre], at that time, all the police and everyone came.”

Detective Superintendent David Eardley said that the shooting was targeted, reported ABC.

He said, “this isn’t a random shooting, it was clearly targeted to the man who has died of gunshot wounds. I can assure the Bankstown and neighbouring communities not to be concerned about this incident.”

Assuring about the security in the area he noted, “You will see a large number of police resources around the Bankstown area. That’s purely a proactive stance by us to again provide some reassurance to the community that it is safe.”

Detectives and forensic experts are examining the crime scene.

This week another man was dead and two others were injured in a shooting at a home in Perth’s Banksia Grove.
