Sweden has decided to add $40.6 million to the budget of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency(UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
Sweden has increased 15 percent contribution following its commitment to support the agency. It highlights Sweden as a consistent and valued partner, and for being loyal in aiding Palestine refugees.
Sweden’s Consul General Ann-Sofie Nilsson said: “The decision to increase our core funding to UNRWA shows the great importance that Sweden attaches to the Agency and its work for Palestine refugees.”
Ann-Sofie also visited Ama’ri refugee camp in Ramallah. She discussed the issues of women empowerment and their protection.
According to a statement, Sweden is expected to announce its support to UNRWA later this year. Bilaterally, Sweden is one of the largest humanitarian donor in the world. It is a long-time backer of UNRWA.
Being a consistent donor, Sweden has contributed more than $693 million including the latest contribution of $40.6 million, from 1993 until now.
Sweden has helped Palestine Refugees to refurbish its human development model. It has been contributing for the economic and cultural development of refugees from years.
Being a member of UNRWA Advisory Commission, Sweden also assisted the Commissioner-General in carrying out the agency’s mandate. Between July 2014 and 2015, Sweden possessed the commission’s rotating chairmanship, according to a report by Menafn.
On the 30th of October 2014, Swedish government announced the recognition of citizenship to Palestinians who had previously been considered stateless, reported Migrationsverket, a Swedish migration agency.
The report said: “ Stateless persons can apply for Swedish citizenship after living in Sweden for four years, which is less time than for ordinary persons who are citizens of a country. This benefit now only applies to Palestinians who are still considered stateless, and not Palestinian citizens from the West Bank, Gaza or East Jerusalem.”
“Children born in Sweden who have at least one parent who is a Palestinian citizen can be registered as Palestinian citizens as well.”
