Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) has been shot, it seems. Though the world doesn’t end with season 11, the life of Sam Winchester may.

Sam and Dean (Jensen Ackles) had been collecting souls after God was incapacitated to create a “soul bomb,” to destroy Amara. But Rowena (Ruth Connell) tells Dean that he has to be the bomb. Rowena puts all the souls the Winchester brothers and Billie (Lisa Berry) collected inside Dean.

Sam is devastated but realises it’s the only way. Similarly, Chuck doesn’t want to kill his sister but knows that with his death the balance of the universe will be gone if Amara lives. So, they both agree to let go of their siblings. Dean asks Castiel (Misha Collins) to protect his brother and asks Sam to scatter his ashes near their mother’s tomb. Chuck then sends Dean towards his sister.

Amara is in a garden, looking up at the dying sun and the dying plants. She realises this is her doing. A woman comes to her and while feeding her pigeons, she realises Amara is sad and tells her that even though people face tough times in a family, they should remain with each other with love.

Gods are shown consumed by self-righteousness and it is the imperfect humans who are shown to have a fuller understanding of the family bond. It is this bond which maintains cosmic balance. She feels guilty. Dean arrives and meets her shortly. Amara tells him he won’t succeed. Dean says he has to try and protect the earthlings. Amara says she never wanted destruction, but her brother mistreated her. Dean gives him the same message as the pigeon lady and asks Amara to put aside her hatred.

Amara summons her brother and says she has finally fathomed the beauty of his creation and heals him and wants to be with him. The sun is restored, God removes the souls from Dean and the heavenly siblings disappear, but tragedy awaits.

A new character, Lady Antonia Bevell (Elizabeth Blackmore), appears. She makes Castiel disappear and shoots Sam Winchester off-screen, saying the Winchester brothers have harmed the earth enough. Dean, unaware of his brother’s fate, finds his mother alive; a parting gift from Amara.

Will season 12 happen without Sam? The brothers have died multiple times before, only to come back to life later. It’s their show. In an interview with EW, Padalecki said he wants the brothers to “go out in a blaze of glory.” Jensen Ackles hinted that the show will not end “with the worst thing happening.” So, Sam might be alive in season 12.
