The Byers family had a happy ending in Stranger Things‘ first season when Will safely returned from the Upside Down. However, things weren’t as fortunate for Nancy’s friend, Barb. Despite a brief appearance, fans of the Netflix series felt for the character and shared the sentiment that she didn’t deserve to die. Will they get a chance to see her again come Stranger Things season 2?

Unfortunately, no matter how viewers wish hard for it, Barb’s death was final. The confirmation comes from the Duffer brothers themselves. An article from The Huffington Post relays a reiteration from the show’s creators.

According to the source, the Duffer brothers had this to say about Barb’s fate:

“I mean, yes — yes, she’s dead. I thought we were pretty clear about that. There’s a slug hanging out of her mouth – out of her dead corpse. And then if you were still confused, [Chief Jim] Hopper finds her in the nest, also very dead.”

To further crush fans’ hope, the brothers added that holding out for Barb’s return is simply wishful thinking.

True enough, viewers of the show saw Barb’s gruesome demise on two occasions. The first one was when Eleven was trying to communicate with her and Will. The heartbreak showing on Nancy’s face when Eleven revealed that Barb was “gone” wasn’t a pleasant thing to watch.

Still, creators of the show can’t blame fans for wishing on Barb’s return. After all, her logical personality and her friendship with Nancy could have offered more to season 2. On the other hand, if Barb didn’t go missing, Nancy also wouldn’t have any motivation for helping Jonathan kill the Demogorgon.

Stranger Things season 2

However, despite season 2 proceeding with zero Barb, fans can still expect a good run. For one, Will’s return to the real world is an important point of driving the story forward. Did that slug he vomited and that sudden vision of the Upside Down mean he’s under some kind of infection?

Is he a threat to Hawkins? Did he pick up some sort of abilities when he was in that alternate landscape?

Answers to these questions will surface when Stranger Things season 2 releases in 2017.
