Port Moresby reports first case of cholera
Last Updated:
The first case of cholera has been reported in Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby.
Five months into a national cholera outbreak, a woman transferred to a city hospital from East Sepik province has tested positive for the disease. She has since recovered.
Around 1,900 cases of cholera have been recorded in the provinces of East Sepik, Madang and Morobe, and there have been around 40 deaths since the outbreak began.
The executive manager of Papua New Guinea's National Health Department, Doctor Enoch Posanai, says a long term solution requires national action.
"Part of the long term sort of approach to address these water related diseases like cholera, diarrhea, typhoid we have to address the whole water supplies and sanitation at the community level."
Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
