The death of our beloved space smuggler Han Solo in J.J Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” left all fans of the character played by Hollywood icon Harrison Ford devastated. However, Han Solo is said to return alive once again in a spinoff anthology movie about a young Han. “Kingsman: The Secret Service” star Taron Egerton is one of the top contenders according to Star Wars News Net. Egerton has apparently auditioned multiple times for the role.
Another actor also to have auditioned is “Hail, Ceasar!” actor Alden Ehrenreich. Ehrenreich, if selected, would be an interesting choice seeing as he has the same squinty-eyed smile that Harrison Ford has though they look quite different from each other. Egerton, however, does not resemble Ford in the slightest.
In any case, it is apparent that Lucasfilm and Disney are not going for a Ford lookalike like Anthony Ingruber, whom many Star Wars fans want as Han Solo due to his striking resemblance to the veteran actor. Ingruber has already earned praise for playing the role of a young Ford in “The Age of Adaline” and is best known for his YouTube impersonations of Harrison Ford. His Han solo impersonation video has received over one million likes as of yet.
However, Egerton and Ehrenreich have more experience in acting undoubtedly and the producers and filmmakers, it seems, are opting for a more recognisable actor rather than a relatively unknown face.
Principal photography on the “Han Solo” movie would likely not begin before 2017 for a summer 2018 release. reports Screenrant.
According to an article in Den of Geek, a 10 year-old Han Solo was at one point to be part of “Revenge of the Sith,” wandering around on Chewbacca’s home planet, Kashyyyk, and he was supposed to have been raised by none other than Chewbacca himself. The scene was also to feature Yoda and his first and only meeting with Solo. However, it didn’t make it onto the final script.
From the casting shortlist, it appears that Disney and Lucasfilm are looking at someone within the 20-30 years age bracket. Both Egerton and Ehrenreich are 26 years old.
A Han Solo origins movie would perhaps keep many fans of the character satisfied following the unforgivable parricide committed by Kylo Ren. There are theories that Han Solo might have knowingly sacrificed himself for his son. However, whether such rumours are true will hopefully be clarified by the filmmakers.
Han Solo will also appear in some capacity in “Star Wars” Episode 8 and perhaps even Episode 9. Harrison Ford will most likely appear in flashbacks revealing more details about Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren’s backstory.
The untitled Han Solo movie will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and is being written by Lawrence Kasdan.
