Disney recently released a great teaser trailer for Gareth Edwards’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” It’s the first in a series of anthology movies of the iconic “Star Wars” series. The second anthology movie is, of course, the highly anticipated “Han Solo” feature and it looks like Disney and Lucasfilm have zeroed-in on their leading man. Alden Ehrenreich has emerged as the front-runner to play Han Solo.
Deadline says it has heard from sources close to the casting process that Ehrenreich has delivered an “impressive performance” in his screen tests for the role once inhabited by Harrison Ford. He is now the top choice. Deadline mentions that neither Disney nor CAA, which represents Ehrenreich, replied to an email from them seeking comment on the casting. This may mean that Ehrenreich has already been selected and the studio is trying to keep it a secret until they make their public announcement, which should happen soon.
Deadline also notes that things are so secretive surrounding the “Han Solo” movie that it is being referred to as project Red Cup. There is a song written by Brett Warren, Brad Warren, Brett Beavers, Jim Beavers and recorded by Toby Keith called “Red Solo Cup.” So, the reference to Han Solo is quite clear. The song will probably not be a part of the movie.
Ehrenreich has impressed Hollywood with his critically lauded performance as fictional actor Hobie Doyle in Joel and Ethan Coen’s “Hail, Caesar!” He will also star in Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes project and an Iraq War drama “The Yellow Birds,” directed by Alexandre Moors. He has also appeared in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Tetro” and Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine.”
Last we heard, the shortlist was narrowed down to three actors – Taron Egerton, Alden Ehrenreich, and Jack Reynor. Egerton said he wasn’t contacted for the role and Reynor said he had auditioned for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and that was it. Ehrenreich has never been interviewed about Han Solo, which makes sense if Lucasfilm wanted not to spill the beans early.
A lot of Star Wars fans still want actor and impressionist Anthony Ingruber (“Age of Adaline”) to be cast as Solo, owing to his wonderful impressions of Harrison Ford on YouTube. Ingruber also played the young Ford in “Age of Adaline.” The Indiana Jones actor even said, “Anthony [Ingruber] is a miracle” after watching his performance in the movie, as reports Fastcocreate. However, it doesn’t seem likely that he will be the new Han Solo.
Anyway, Ehrenreich would be a very good choice indeed. His smile has an uncanny likeness to the way Ford smiles. Though he is a bit shorter than Ford at 5’8, that difference can easily be explained in the script. The movie by Phil Lord and Chris Miller will also tackle the origin of Han’s co-pilot Chewbacca.
