Should we expect the “Star Wars” franchise to be more inclusive in the future? The director wants the next movie to have an openly gay character.
According to Vulture, J.J. Abrams wants to shake things up a little bit. He is open to including a gay character or two in a future movie. “To me the fun of Star Wars is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow minded to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world,” Abrams explained. The director confirmed this at the U.S.-Ireland Alliance Oscar Wilde Awards this week.
The Vulture pointed out that inclusiveness was not exactly the franchise’s strong suit in the past. “The Star Wars universe was about as straight, and as male, as your average list of American presidents,” the news site reports. This, however, changed with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
The most recent episode included a strong female lead character, Rey. It also featured a black Stormtrooper, Finn. According to Cinema Blend, fans are speculating that Finn is gay and involved with another male character. Fans speculate that “Poe and Finn might be involved in an romance in future installments,” the film site reported.
“Star Wars 7” received both critical and box office successes last year. It was nominated for five Academy awards. Abrams, a nominee, was one of the presenters on Oscar night. Droids R2-D2, BB-8 and C-3PO also showed up on the awards show.
The follow-up to “The Force Awakens” is currently in production. It was previously announced that Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro and actress Laura Dern will join the cast. Could either actor play the openly gay character Abrams wants? Or are Finn and Poe really in a relationship as fans speculate? We won’t find out until late this year.
“Star Wars 8” is set to hit theaters on December 15.
