In a recent interview at Cannes, British actor John Boyega, who stars in the latest “Star Wars” trilogy, gave an update on the relationship status of fan favourites Rey and Finn and it’s not going to turn out the way most expect it to.
“I mean, we didn’t establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way. Daisy and I, we’re friends,” Boyega told Variety when asked how the romance between his character Finn and Daisy Ridley’s Rey would evolve in the next chapter directed by Rian Johnson.
Boyega added that “Finn and Rey – they’re just friends. Finn is a Stormtrooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next installment. It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.”
One of the highlights of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was the instant chemistry between John Boyega and Daisy Ridley. In many interviews, the two actors have stated that they hit it off immediately once they met on the set of the film and have been best friends ever since. They have some very funny and cute exchanges on Instagram, as noted by Mashable.
In Episode VII, their characters have never known their family and instantly become attached to each other once they meet on the desert planet Jakku. The script hints at a deeper, more lasting bond developing between the two lead characters that would hopefully grow beyond just friendship. A romantic bond between the two characters is expected by many fans. But, there were earlier reports that suggested actress Kelly Marie Tran could be the new love interest for Finn as Rey is away training with Luke Skywalker. Then there are those unconfirmed reports that suggest Rey is Anakin Skywalker re-incarnated. It remains to be seen whether such rumours are true.
Also, when asked if Boyega’s character takes a dark turn in Episode VIII, he said “My skin colour does because of the heat on the job! That’s me dodging your question because Disney has spies everywhere. If I answer this, I get killed, and I’m not in episode nine.”
