Sherlock Season 5 Cancelled? Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals Truth

Sherlock season 5

The fans who have been clamoring for more of Sherlock TV series, might not be happy to know the series may not continue after season 4. Lately, actor Benedict Cumberbatch revealed that it might be the last for the detective series.  Does that mean, Sherlock Season 5 is canceled?

Sherlock season 4 starring Cumberbatch as the iconic detective and Martin Freeman as his assistant Doctor Watson, is expected to return to the small screens early next year.  Recently the male lead of the hit BBC drama said it may have run its course.

In an interview with GQ UK Cumberbatch opened up and told:

“It might be the end of an era, It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately. We never say never on the show. I’d love to revisit it, I’d love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we’ve made something very complete as it is, so I think we’ll just wait and see. The idea of never playing him again is really galling,” learned Variety.

His statement clearly indicates the future of the crime drama is uncertain.  Sherlock season 5 might have to struggle to find its way into existence.

Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss the award-winning show has been airing since 2010. Later on, Sherlock has taken several gaps and returned in 2012 and 2014. A special episode titled as The Abominable Bride was aired on 1 January 2016. The channel has picked the series for a season 4 renewal which began filming in April 2016 for an intended 2017 release. According to reports, the production for the Sherlock Season 4 just wrapped in August. The series, which airs on PBS in the U.S. and BBC in the UK has pulled in notable gains over the period of time.

A few days back at San Diego Comic-Con in July, even Moffat and Gatiss remained tight-lipped about the show’s fate but also clarified they never intended to imply that Season 4 would be the last, according to Deadline. They also revealed that the upcoming installment will be the darkest season ever.
