A Dutch woman has been convicted of having sex outside marriage by a court in Qatar after she told police she was raped.
According to several sources, the 22-year-old Dutch woman was served with a sentence of suspension. She was also fined $824 (AU$ 1115) and will be deported to the Netherlands.
The Dutch woman was arrested in March while she was vacationing in Qatar. This took place after she informed police that she had been drugged at the W Doha Hotel and raped at a stranger’s apartment. The woman’s lawyer said that her drink had been “spiked” at the W Doha hotel and she came to her senses in a stranger’s flat. It was at the apartment where she realized that she had been raped, says BBC.
According to her lawyer, Brian Lokollo, police arrested her as she was suspected of adultery, which means having sex outside marriage.
The stranger she had accused of raping her was also arrested. The man claimed that the two had consensual sex. The accused man in the case was identified as Omar Abdullah al-Hasan.
However, the man was sentenced to 100 lashes for having sex outside of marriage. The act the two had committed was a serious offense in this conservative Gulf state.
The woman was to be deported to the Netherlands once the ruling was made official. The formalized ruling of her deportation is expected over the coming days, according to the ambassador to the Netherlands Yvette Burghgraef-van Eechoud.
“Had she been a Muslim woman, she would have received at least five years in jail. No one can get out of such charges here in Qatar,” said an official statement, which was made in court.
It was reported by The Cut that the instance is quite terrifying as she was punished in a court of law for reporting a rape. The publication also said that it is even worse for non-Westerners.
