Selena Gomez is working with Freedom and Aaron Kaplan to launch a drama series. The project is tentatively called as Latina Empire.
The drama, which is still in its development stage, is about a low-income Latina neighbourhood. The story is told from a teenage girl’s perspective. According to reports, Selena is the executive producer with Aaron. They will be operating under Kapital Entertainment. According to IMDb, the production company has already been involved in almost 250 productions.

According to Deadline, the project is Aaron’s idea. He got the idea of such a project when he visited The Zimmer Children’s Museum Discovery Award Dinner in November 2015. He was there to present an award to James Mandelbaum. The attorney, along with Freeform’s EVP programming Karey Burke, was honoured at the event.
Los Angeles high school senior Ana Cobarrubias is going be a consultant in the Latina Empire project. She was a speaker at the event in November and received a standing ovation for the speech. She talked about making a difference in the East LA neighbourhood. She also talked about defying the society’s expectations with her confidence and strength.
The high school student’s speech inspired Aaron so much that he came up with the idea for the drama series. He talked to Burke about the idea. Burke liked the idea, and both of them went to Selena. She was ready to become the executive producer for the project. However, she still does not have any plans to act in it.
Aaron approached Cobarrubias, as she had talked about her ambition to have a career in films. She wants to tell stories about her people from low-income neighbourhoods.
Universal Cable Prods. and Freeform are going to co-produce the series. UCP President Jeff Wachtel’s wife Sheryl was the one who had organised the Zimmer Museum’s dinner.
Selena is also the executive producer of 13 Reasons Why, an upcoming series by Netflix.
