After two years of being together, Lea Michele and Matthew Paetz have split earlier this month.
ET Online confirms the news with a a source saying that the split was “a huge shock to all their friends.”
“Lea and Matthew were talking about getting engaged as recently as around the holidays. Everyone thought they would get engaged soon, but definitely not split,” the source added.
The “Scream Queens” actress met aspiring actor/model Paetz in April while filming her music video for “On My Way” where Paetz was not the main love interest in the music video, but still gets some screen time playing one of Michele’s friends.
“For a long time, Lea wasn’t close to even thinking about getting into a relationship,” a source tells People. “Cory’s death was and will continue to be a struggle for her.”
People also confirms that in the wake of the breakup, the actress has turned to her close circle of friends for support.
“Lea is surrounded by her friends, who have rallied around her and support her,” says a source close to the couple. “She’s doing fine, focusing on her work, her music and her album.”
Just last November, Michele opened up to Elle magazine about still grieving from Monteith’s death.
Monteith was found dead in his room at the Fairmount Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver on July 13, 2013 from “mixed drug toxicity” including heroin and alcohol.
“It’s very hard. And you have to be very strong to come out of this alive, but I think by doing the best for myself, by showing that you don’t have to lose yourself, maybe someone else will feel some sort of strength or comfort,” she told the magazine. “There was no greater man than Cory. So for the time we spent together I consider myself very lucky.”
Just last month, Michele gushed about her then-beau when she spoke at Fempire. Michele said Monteith would have definitely approved of Paetz.
“He is very respectful towards the person that I was with, and that, again, is something I love so much about him,” Michele continued, adding, “I really know that Cory would love him too.”
