Kerry Washington aka Oliver Pope of “Scandal” Season 5 is now impressing as Anita Hill of HBO’s “Confirmation.”
The fans may find these characters played by Washington as many poles apart. While Pope is an outspoken personality who has the urge to fix every solution, Hill is a character fighting out a distressful incident with poise. Although both Pope and Hill are strong as well as daring, but their ways of handling things are different.
If Hill’s character constrains Washington, on the other hand, it offered her a platform to do what may be her best performance yet. The “Scandal” star skilfully captures Hill’s emotionally drained state of mind onscreen. Washington paid attention to every detail of Hill’s personality. Her drained speaking style, her use of silence, in the way she watches Thomas on TV, breathing slowly and weighing whether she should put herself forward, or the way she closes her eyes and gathers herself before she speaks; everything is commendable.
Washington’s brilliant work makes the audience relate to Hill’s experience. It is a story of a courageous woman who knows how to fight for her dignity against all odds. She is a true hero for many like her who is being victimized by sexual harassment but never could dare to come out due to social pressure. And there would be hardly any denial in accepting the fact that Washington did an excellent job in bringing her to the small screen.
USA Today said, the story-line of “Confirmation” follows a real-life occurrence of Anita Hill’s accusations of sexual harassment against Supreme Court nominee (now Justice) Clarence Thomas. Hill had to face the extreme difficulties to sustain the fight. From her morals to her sanity to her memory, everything was being questioned by the senatorial inquisitors during Thomas’ 1991 confirmation hearings. It was quite a typical reaction that we have been seen for years, happening to a woman who takes a stand in a male-dominated society. However, Hill faced everything with bravery. Her strength and dignity conveyed through her silence and quietness. Hill’s patience and calmness refuted every effort to declare her as “hysterical.”
