Samsung Galaxy S8 to Have Foldable OLED Displays?

Soon, Samsung will be launching a foldable smartphone which can be used as a tablet as well as a phone. The device is reported to enter mass production by the end of this year and will hit the market in 2017. The news was leaked by an unnamed Samsung executive, cited by South Korea’s ETNews.

Since the device is slated to be launched in 2017, rumours are indicating that Samsung Galaxy S8 could sport the foldable OLED display, notes IBTimes. As iPhone 7 is bringing a lot of change in its design and features, Samsung is under immense pressure to give a design change in its upcoming smartphone.

ETNews report suggests that Samsung Display, company’s display manufacturing arm, have partnered with several manufacturers to implement the idea of a foldable smartphone into reality. The company is planning to launch the device in 7 inches which can be folded and can be used as a 5-inch smartphone.  The handset is set to have OLED displays.

“Although mass-production cannot be concluded hastily since Samsung Electronics still has few other major tasks to complete, I’ve heard that Samsung Electronics had made the considerable amount of results in the time being,” according to a source of ETNews.

In January, the firm hinted the development of foldable OLED displays, giving a reference to an actual foldable smartphone.

“Development of Foldable OLED is taking place according to our plan. We are planning on mass-production and release of this product by discussing with our partners,” said Lee Chang-hoon, Director of Samsung’s Display division, during investors call in January.

However, the company has not shared any details on how a foldable smartphone would work. Since  the company has already used OLED displays in its curved HDTVs, Galaxy S6 Edge, and S7 Edge smartphones, it is less surprising that the company would be using foldable OLED panels in its upcoming smartphone.

Recently, the company unveiled its latest flagship Galaxy S7 series; however, no major upgrades are seen in terms of design. So, it would be revolutionary change if the company uses the foldable display provided the execution is done right.
