Neymar could be on his way to becoming Brazil’s national hero after he scored the fastest goal in Olympic history on Wednesday. Brazil thrashed Honduras in the semi-final match, where they set up a chance at redemption against Germany.

According to Give Me Sport, it took Neymar only 14 seconds to draw first blood against Honduras after a defensive error by Johnny Palacios. The Brazilian captain stole the ball near the penalty box and managed to score via a deflection from Honduras keeper Luis Lopez. He now holds the record for scoring the fastest goal in any Olympic football match. The semi-final against Honduras ended with an impressive score of 6-0 in favor of the hosts.

“Neymar is a monster. He has a gift of playing football and delights everybody with his talent,” said Brazil coach Rogerio Micale. CNN reports that he has nothing but compliments for the FC Barcelona player after they booked their seat in the gold medal match. While the thrashing of Honduras seems impressive, the team had not exactly been showing brilliance in the early stages of the competition. They will be needing Neymar’s powers and all the rest of them combined if they want to defeat 2014 FIFA World Cup holders Germany.

The gold medal match is not just a chance to win at home, it is also a chance at redemption. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup,  Brazil was humiliated by Germany, which booted them out of the semi-finals with an embarrassing score of 7-1.

Brazil was the favorite to reach the final at the 2014 World Cup, but were unceremoniously booted out by the eventual winners. This time around, Brazil will get a chance to face Germany at the Maracana for an opportunity to redeem themselves. The wounds from two years ago are still fresh, and the pressure will be on the hosts’ shoulders.

The gold medal match for men’s football for the Rio Olympics 2016 is scheduled on Saturday. With the games already riddled with criticism, it remains to be seen if Neymar and his squad have what it takes to bring pride and glory back to the Maracana.
