The Rio Olympics 2016 is a time for healthy competition and camaraderie among competing nations. However, some athletes have taken it a step further and even more special by competing alongside their significant other. Here’s a list of some notable couples who are making a special appearance in Rio.

1. Safwan Khalil and Carmen Marton (Australia)

The Aussie pair are both competing in Taekwondo for the land down under. Marton is a very strong medal contender and it does not hurt that she has her fiance by her side in Rio. Apart from Khalil, Marton’s sister is also part of Australia’s Taekwondo contingent. What makes them extra special is how both of them come from refugee families. They explained their family and relationship history in an interview with the Huffington Post.

2. Federica Pellegrini and Filippo Magnini (Italy)

Federica happens to be the flag bearer for Italy. Her multiple swimming medals and records for her country have granted her that honor. The games are made even more special by the presence of her boyfriend and fellow swimmer Filippo Magnini. In an interview with the Italian edition of Vanity Fair, Pellegrini expressed her desire to one day be married and have children. Although both she and Magnini are currently focused on the Rio Olympics, she knows that  she will be faced with the choice to retire after the games.

3. Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh (England)

It’s not just traditional couples who are making a mark in this year’s Olympic games. England field hockey captain Kate Richardson-Walsh and her teammate Helen are a same-sex couple. The pair practically grew up together but were only married almost a year ago. “I feel quite proud that I was brought up around hockey, where there have been lots of different ethnicities, religions, sexualities and so on. It’s normal, and I feel proud of that,” said Kate in a recent interview with BBC.

Watch out for these couples and a few others as they battle for glory in the  Rio Olympics 2016.
