Rihanna confirmed that she and Chris Brown did get back together after he assaulted her in 2009, and she explained why.
In the cover story of Vanity Fair November issue, the 27-year-old R&B singer said she took back Brown after the publicized incident because she thought she was his “guardian angel” and she could save him.
Brown assaulted Rihanna in February 2009. Three years after, they got back together briefly.
Rihanna admitted that she petitioned the court to have her restraining order against Brown lifted.
“That girl who felt that as much pain as this relationship is, maybe some people are built stronger than others. Maybe I’m one of those people built to handle s–t like this. Maybe I’m the person who’s almost the guardian angel to this person, to be there when they’re not strong enough, when they’re not understanding the world, when they just need someone to encourage them in a positive way and say the right thing,” Rihanna told the magazine.
“A hundred percent. I was very protective of him. I felt that people didn’t understand him,” she added.
When asked about her relationship status with Brown now, Rihanna said, “I don’t hate him. I will care about him until the day I die. We’re not friends, but it’s not like we’re enemies. We don’t have much of a relationship now.”
Since her relationship with Brown ended, the Barbados singer has been romantically linked with several men including Drake and Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, and she was recently spotted with rapper Travis Scott, the Daily News noted.
However, Rihanna admitted to Vanity Fair that Brown was her last official boyfriend.
Brown’s probation for his assault charges in 2009 ended in March this year, but Rihanna’s name will always be linked with domestic violence.
CBS pulled her hit song “Run This Town” with Jay Z and Kanye West from the 2014 NFL opening-week broadcast in the wake of Ray Rice’s domestic abuse scandal.
