A female Queensland teacher has been suspended and arrested for having an alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old high school male student.
Police have alleged that the 30-year-old woman had been sexually involved with her student from North Queensland high school for six months. Besides child sex allegations, she has also been claimed to have dealt indecently with a 15-year-old girl. Following her termination from the North Queensland high school, she has been arrested and is now charged with four counts of procuring a young person for carnal knowledge and indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16.
Townsville Child Protection Investigation Unit Officer-in-Charge Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Miles confirmed that the teachers of the school contacted the police to inform them about the alleged crime.
“Our investigations have identified the alleged sexual relationship between the student and the teacher had been ongoing for about six months,” he said. “The indecent treatment charge relates to her alleged conduct with a 15-year-old girl and the exchanging of material between the two of them.
“It’s not child exploitation material, rather discussions and the things they were talking about. Due diligence by the senior staff at the school identified the issue when it first became noticeable and alerted authorities very quickly, which allowed us to respond in a timely manner.”
Miles, according to The Brisbane Times, also stated that the teacher held a powerful position in the school. Hence, she took advantage of the same over the students. The Department of Education and Training, on the other hand, also confirmed that the authorities have already suspended the teacher after the matter came to their attention. The department’s spokeswoman said that the matter is due before the courts and the authorities cannot reveal more details.
The alleged female Queensland teacher will appear before the court on November 3, 2016.
