Playstation 4 fans who were pleased to hear about the upcoming PS4 Neo may have more to look forward to. Recent reports suggest that aside from the Neo, another device is in the works, potentially called the PS5. What’s more interesting is the possibility that the PS4 Neo and PS5 could launch the same day.

An article from Forbes details why the release of another Playstation aside from the Neo is possible. It cites Takashi Mochisuki from Wall street Jourrnal in saying that Sony may replicate what it did with the Playstation 3. The analyst recalls how a slimmer PS3 was introduced back in 2009.

In relation to this, a slimmer PS4 could also be in the works. It is highly unlikely that an updated, slimmer version of the PS4 would be termed PS5. However, for the sake of setting it apart from the Neo, we are calling it as such in ths article.

PS4 Neo and PS5 release date rumors

Sony has been silent about when the PS4 Neo or the PS5 could release. However, in an article by GameSpot, reports emerged that the Neo comes out before 2016 ends. Consequently, if release date history serves as basis, a slimmer PS4 could launch on September 2016.

It is important to note though that a PS5/slimmer PS4 hasn’t even been confirmed so release date rumors on this one are purely guess work.

Still, if both device will indeed come out this year, sharing the same release date is possible.

Rumor roundup

While nothing concrete was announced on Neo’s official release date, Tech Advisor UK projects that an official announcement may come before the VR launches on October 13. It further notes that the Neo could hit shelves on or before Christmas 2016.

The website also thinks strongly that a PS5 is in the works. Regarding this possibility, Tech Advisor UK quotes PlayStation Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida in saying:

“If they [the developers] still feel that we need more machine power – ‘we want to realise this and that and that, but we cannot do it with the PS4’ – there’s a good reason to have the PS5 so developers can create their vision.”
