The release of Pokémon Sun and Moon has broken records. It is said that these two are Nintendo’s biggest ever launch in the UK. Pokémon Sun and Moon launch last week notched up more sales than any other Pokémon duo or any other game on 3DS. The previous record holder was Wii Fit, and the Pokémon Sun and Moon first day of sales smashed Wii Fit’s first week of sales back in 2008.
It’s been recorded that Pokémon Sun and Moon launch marked the strongest week for sales at UK games retail. More copies of Sun and Moon were sold in one day than Wii Fit managed over two.
Pokémon Sun and Moon are role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. They are the first installments in the seventh generation of Pokémon games.
Pokémon Sun and Moon launched at No.3 (Sun) and No.4 (Moon), beaten by hit games like FIFA 17 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, each of their numbers boosted by Black Friday price cuts, reported EUROGAMER. However, if those two ranks had been combined, Pokémon Sun and Moon would have taken the top spot comfortably.
Furthermore, the two Pokémon games also sold twice as many units as the earlier 3DS outing, 2014’s Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, although those were remakes of earlier games, according to gamesindustry.
What led to such a thumping launch?
Sources revealed that the summer success of Pokémon Go on smartphones has heightened the games’ pre-orders to a notable extent. There is a significant rise in sales, which proved how mobile gaming can actually benefit sales of Nintendo’s portable hardware. This has also widened the scope for Nintendo’s upcoming home console portable hybrid Nintendo Switch.
