Another screenwriting masterpiece was Bridge of Spies, written by British screenwriter Matt Charman. It is based on a real-life prisoner exchange. He never imagined that the screenplay would be polished by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen. Neither did he dream of having Steven Spielberg as the director of the movie.

“As a young screenwriter, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and the Coen brothers working together—that’s the most incredible film school you could ever have,” Charman told Creative Screenwriting.

Seasoned screenwriter Charles Randolph wrote the script for The Big Short, based on the book by Michael Lewis. He has written screenplays for movies like Love & Other Drugs and The Interpreter.

He said it had taken him three months to adapt the book. It took another three months to make it simpler.

“I usually start with the characters,” Randolph said. “I usually give them each a quirk and measure everything against that quirk.” He also talked about collaborating with Adam McKay.

He said McKay joined in around two years after he had first written the screenplay. “We didn’t collaborate together in the sharing idea process,” he said. “I did my thing, and then he did his thing on top of mine.”

Other movies which were nominated for the “Best Adapted Screenplay” category were Brooklyn, Carol, The Martian and Room. Other movies which were nominated for the “Best Original Screenplay” category were Ex Machina, Inside Out and Straight Outta Compton.
