There are good and bad news for “Orange is the New Black” fans.
Netflix has renewed the hit series for three more seasons.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will move forward for at least two more years following this season and Jenji Kohan will continue producing.
Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president of original content, said: “Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal and impactful series that is both funny and dramatic, outrageous and heartfelt. Audiences around the world have come to love the ladies and men of Orange is the New Black, and we are eager to see where three more seasons will take them.”
With this renewal, the prison-set comedy/drama has been given the longest commitment of any Netflix originals, THR wrote.
OITNB has received critical acclaim as well as numerous awards nominations and wins since it premiered.
The show has won four Emmys and received an additional 12 nominations. It also received four Critics’ Choice awards and an additional four nominations, It has been nominated for six Golden Globes as well.
OITNB just nabbed two SAG Awards last weekend , with Uzo Aduba winning best actress in a comedy series and its cast taking home the prize for best comedy series ensemble, the second year in a row the show has won both awards.
Digital Spy reported Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, played by Aduba, will leave the show after this season to pursue her dream on stage. She will take on the role in Jamie Lloyd’s production of “The Maids,” a modern version of Jean Genet’s dark drama by the same title. The play will show in London’s West End and broadway.
The OITNB star said: “I wanted to desperately do a play, and all of a sudden plays started falling out of the air!”
“Moving to New York, I had three dreams: doing an off-Broadway show, a Broadway show and a West End show if I was lucky enough. And right now, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world,” she added.
“The Maids” will open at London’s Trafalgar Studios on February 20.
Meanwhile, “Orange Is the New Black” returns on Netflix on June 17 for its fourth season.
