Scientists have been working down the track to unriddle some embedded theories of Zika Virus transmission. Now, they are speculating that the virus could be transmitted by oral sex.
Earlier, the virus is thought to be spread by Aedes mosquito. But researchers working on sexual transmission aspect also add that the virus could proliferate not by vaginal but oral sex.
Zika Virus has been linked with microcephaly – a health disorder which leads to an underdeveloped brain in babies. It was also linked with Guillain–Barré syndrome, where the immune system attacks the nervous system. Week by week, scientists have been tickling their gray matter as the new theories surface.
A report by New England Journal of Medicine unfurls the evidence that oral sex could be another cause of the virus. It explained about a person travelling from Rio De Janerio to Paris who might have contracted the virus. He is suspected of transmitting the virus to his partner.
On Feb 7, this 46-year old man suffered from Zika symptoms like fever, body pain and rashes. As he arrived in Paris on Feb 10, the symptoms were gone. In the next 10 days, the man had vaginal and sexual intercourse with his 24-year old partner. The woman who had not been to any Zika-induced regions contracted the same symptoms. She was ill for a week, according to Huffington Post.
“We cannot rule out the possibility that transmission occurred not through semen but through other biologic fluids, such as pre-ejaculate secretions or saliva exchanged through deep kissing.” said scientists in a report by Glamour.
Zika Virus is currently gripping the South and Central American countries, and some Caribbean Islands. Several cases have been reported where people travelled from infected regions.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended people who are returning from the infected countries, to hold on to sexual intercourse for six to eight weeks.
