It’s been months since One Direction fans saw the members of the British-Irish boyband together in person. However, could the most unlikely 1D singer be the key to their reunion at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards 2016?

One Direction is nominated in two categories, Top Duo or Group and for Top Touring Artist, the Inquisitr reported. It’s likely a bittersweet moment for the boys. They won both awards at last year’s event though it came on the heels of Zayn Malik’s departure.

Their shout out to Malik during their acceptance speech last year became one of the best moments in Billboard Music Award history, Teen Vogue wrote. The publication recalled fans’ reactions to Liam Payne’s words at the end.

“There’s one more person to share this with, and that’s our brother Zayn,” Payne said.

The boys are likely to make history despite their hiatus, Sugarscape wrote. The publication recalled their victory at the 2016 BRIT Awards for Best British Video. This time around, winning the Top Duo/Artist trophy could also make them record breakers, the publication added. As it turns out, One Direction and Destiny’s Child have both won the award twice.

While their victory might be highly anticipated, Directioners are more eager to learn if the boys will attend the event. Metro recalled that Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson were the only One Direction members in attendance at the BRIT Awards. Niall Horan missed the event because he was on a holiday in Thailand. However, Harry Styles, who was in London at the time, didn’t attend the ceremony.

His absence at the BRIT Awards prompted fans to worry about the band’s future. Others even wondered if Styles was hiding from someone or simply refused attention during their hiatus. The 1D members have spent time in Los Angeles over the past few months. While the BMA would be the ideal opportunity for the band to reunite, it’s unknown who among them would attend the event, the Inquisitr noted.
