One of the hotly debated issues in recent times does not necessarily involve politics or the economy. It centers on who the next James Bond will be after Daniel Craig officially steps down from his post as Agent 007.
There have been several actors rumored to be the next guy to step into the world of international espionage and gorgeous women. The Night Manager actor Tom Hiddleston has consistently been the fan’s choice but appears that all that is about to change.
Poldark star Aidan Turner is being hotly tipped to portray the next James Bond. The News Letter reports that the 32-year-old Irishman actor is now the frontrunner of all potential 007 candidates, with odds at 1-2.
Hiddleston follows closely with odds at 2-1. Fellow British stars Idris Elba, Damian Lewis, Tom Hardy, and Henry Cavill are also in the running. Divergent: Allegiant actor Theo James is also reportedly being associated with the role.
“Turner’s been shaking and stirring the betting for the last week and it’s not a huge surprise to see he’s been backed into odds-on,” Ladbrokes spokesperson Jessica Bridge says.
Aside from the starring in the hit BBC series, Turner also appeared in The Hobbit trilogy and the BBC miniseries And Then There Were None.
Hiddleston, on the other hand, has constantly denied rumors about him taking on the James Bond mantle. He once again addressed the rumors at the Wizard World Comic Con. “I’m sorry to disappoint you, everybody. I don’t think that announcement is coming,” Hiddleston told the audience.
Despite the outpouring support from punters, Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes has warned that the selection process for the next James Bond does not fall into the hands of the public. “I can guarantee whatever happens with it, it will not be what you expect,” Mendes reveals, Mirror quotes. He adds that James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has done a brilliant job at making that choice.
With Mendes officially stepping out of the multi-million James Bond franchise, Broccoli is on the lookout for a new director. There are rumblings that the top bet so far is The Night Manager director Susanne Bier.
