Australia dominated the proceedings of the first day of the 1st Test match at Basin Reserve, Wellington. Having won the toss and electing to field first, Josh Hazlewood and Peter Siddle ripped apart the New Zealand batting order on the green turf of the Basin Reserve.
The visitors scalped five wickets in the first hour of the day and routed the hosts for a modest first inning total of 183. Corey Anderson was the lone resistance from the Kiwi side with 38-runs coming in 144 balls. Mark Craig also chipped in with his late innings 44 in 80-balls.
Siddle and Hazlewood went through the Kiwi batting line-up like hot knife through butter. Hazlewood picked up four wickets while Siddle scalped three. Nathan Lyon was impressive too which helped him bag three wickets in the first innings. Australian seamers used the moisture on the pitch to their advantage.
As per the ESPN Cricinfo reports, Australia too lost early wickets as Joe Barns and David Warner were sent back cheaply by Tim Southee. It looked like the replay of the 1st inning batting horror but Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith steadied the ship to end the first day’s play at 147 for the loss of three wickets, still trailing by 36 runs.
Usman Khawaja is batting at 57 while the late evening wicket of Steve Smith at 71 put New Zealand right back in the match. Adam Vogues and Khawaja remained not out till the end of the day, notes cricket.com.au.
We expect the Kiwi bowlers to come back strongly and use the Basin Reserve surface early in the morning. If Khawaja and Vogue puts on a good partnership and see through the 1st session, Australia are then looking a big total.
