Actor, writer, director and producer Lena Dunham is something of a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. She is best known as the creator and star of the very popular TV series “Girls.” She has already snagged two Golden Globes. She has written a book and has a publication of her own. It is not quite unthinkable for such a woman to play Joan of Arc. She did play the historical character in the comedy movie “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.” Sadly, the scene was cut from the theatrical release.
Dunham posted an image of herself dressed as “The Maid of Orléans” in front of a blue screen, tied to a funeral pyre, sporting blades on her arms. “Throwback to when I played the role of Joan of Arc in ‘Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising’. I ended up on the cutting room floor so you won’t see my scene in the film, but it was all worth it for these blade hands and the chance to rewrite history as a Joan who jumps off the flaming pyre and guts a lot of men. I CANNOT WAIT for this rad movie,” she wrote on Instagram.
Of course, if one recalls the first “Neighbors” movie starring Zac Efron, they’d remember that historical scenes are basically spoofed, like the trip through Greek history. It’d have been great if the real Joan of Arc could’ve somehow survived her horrible fate, but it is her sacrifice which immortalises her. Perhaps director Nicholas Stoller realised he was playing with fire (no pun intended) with this scene and decided to cut it out.
Collider notes that the scene will likely end up in the Blu-ray of the movie as some deleted and alternate scenes that were cut from “Neighbors,” were include in the home video releases.
