“NCIS” fans hold on for this one – very Special Agent DiNozzo is about to exit the show.
You read it right, Michael Weatherly, who played Anthony DiNozzo, is saying goodbye after 13 years as Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ right hand man.
Weatherly confirmed his departure from the show on his Twitter account and thanked the fans who supported him for the past 13 years.
The actor also shared some photos on the set of “NCIS” and with co-star Pauley Perrette.
CBS also confirmed Weatherly’s exit.
“He is a valued part of the CBS family, and the immense charm and talent he brings to the screen as ‘Very’ Special Agent Tony DiNozzo has helped make NCIS what it is today — the No. 1 drama in the world,” CBS said in statement to E! News.
CBS, however, hinted that the actor will still continue to work with the network: “We thank Michael for all of his contributions to this successful franchise and look forward to continuing to develop projects with him as part of our ongoing development deal.”
David McCallum, who plays Ducky, let slip about Weatherly’s long-planned exit in an interview with UK’s Vulture Hound magazine.
McCallum said: “DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly, we’ve told people a long time ago, is leaving at the end of the season. So the writers have to decide what to do when one of the four members of the original cast leaves.”
McCallum and Weatherly, along with lead actor Mark Harmon (Gibbs) and Pauley Perrette (Abby), were the surviving original members of the cast. The show also stars Sean Murray, Rocky Carroll and Emily Wickersham.
Now that Weatherly is about to leave the show, will season 13 be the last for NCIS? Many are also asking, will DiNozzo finally look for Ziva so they can live happily ever after? So far, nothing has been confirmed.
Amidst the heartbreak, there is a silver lining here – Weatherly is staying through the end of the current season.
“NCIS” airs Tuesdays on CBS.
