‘The Mummy’ Reboot: Tom Cruise Film Eyes Annabelle Wallis for Scientist Role

Universal Pictures’ “The Mummy” reboot is gathering pace. English actress Annabelle Wallis, known for the TV series “The Tudors,” “Peaky Blinders,” and the upcoming film “The Brothers Grimsby,” is reportedly being courted to star alongside Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise, reports Variety and The Hollywood Reporter (THR).

Wallis, who will also star as Maid Maggie in Guy Ritchie’s “Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur” (2017), will play an archaeologist in the Mummy reboot, similar to the character played by Rachel Weisz in Stephen Sommer’s “The Mummy” (1999). “Kingsman: The Secret Service” actress Sofia Boutella will be playing the female Mummy, the antagonist in the film.

It has been previously reported that Universal will follow the successful “Avengers” model of introducing iconic characters and then integrating them in an eventual ensemble feature. Universal’s iconic monster franchises like The Mummy, Frankenstein, Van Helsing, Dracula, Wolf Man, and Invisible Man will all get their solo movies which will somehow be connected to each other. These monsters will then all appear in an Avengers-style film. It is difficult to imagine Tom Cruise appearing in an ensemble film, unless of course he leads the pack.

“The Mummy” reboot is being helmed by Alex Kurtzman who has previously written the Tom Cruise starrer “Mission: Impossible III” and is known for having written other films like “Transformers,” “Star Trek: Into Darkness” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Jon Spaihts of “Prometheus” has penned the screenplay.

The story is set in modern day, reports THR. The synopsis, according to IMDB, is as follows:

“The story follows Navy Seal Tyler Colt and his mission in the Iraqi desert to find a group of terrorists hiding out in a bunker. To his and his team’s surprise, the terrorists within the bunker turn out to be nothing more than some grave robbers who have all magically died.

Upon entering the bunker, Tyler and his team also succumb to some mystical forces out of their control. They soon realize the bunker they have infiltrated is actually a centuries-old tomb. Mayhem erupts as all the Navy Seal members start turning on one another and are captivated by the forces within the tomb.

Tyler is the only one to make it all the way deep within the tomb alive to find a black iron sarcophagus. It’s marked with Egyptian symbols like the Ankh and Eye of Horus. Here, Tyler is entreated by the forces to open the sarcophagus and release what is inside. But after placing his hand on the sarcophagus, he is immediately stabbed in the palm with a star shaped symbol. From then on Tyler’s mind is cursed with visions of Ashurbanipal, King of Assyria … The Mummy.”

“The Mummy” will be produced by Alex Kurtzman, Chris Morgan, and Sean Daniel. It will be released in June 2017.
