SBS recently premiered its latest period K-drama offering. The story takes place during the time of the Goryeo Dynasty around the 10th century. What could a 21st century woman be doing in the past on Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo?

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo took over the timeslot left behind by the popular SBS K-drama Doctors. The network likely hopes it would carry on the success of its predecessor. Perhaps, it might since it offers a different theme.

The premiere episode, which debuted last August 30, showed a modern Korean woman transported back in time during a solar eclipse. Go Ha-jin presumed the worst after her fall into the water. However, she awoke in a different body with another identity.

Moreover, the people around her treated her as Lady Hae Soo. Thus, no one knew who she really was. Yet a few noticed some changes in her. Her identity might unravel further in episode 3 as she gets involved in the ongoing power struggle in the palace.

IU or singer Lee Ji-eun plays the lead female role in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. Baekhyun from the K-pop boy group EXO is also part of the cast as Eun, the 10th Prince. Both are popular in their own rights as K-pop stars. However, viewers were not quite receptive of their inclusion in the period K-drama. Several comments from online communities advised both singers to stick with music instead. One viewer commented their casting was likely a ploy to gain viewership ratings given their popularity.

“Wtf is this? Baekhyun doesn’t understand his character at all. They probably used him to gain higher viewer ratings but I seriously just can’t watch it whenever he comes on,” allkpop quoted an online comment.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo returns to SBS on Monday, Sept 5.
