Rumors have been circulating that “Top Gun 2” is heading for the theaters soon. It is also believed that “Mission Impossible 5” star Tom Cruise will be reprising his role as “Maverick” in the highly anticipated sequel.
Collider seems to hint that the sequel for the 1986 box office film “Top Gun” is now a work in progress.
“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today,” Skydance Media Company CEO David Ellison said in the interview.
“It is I don’t think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak.”
Ellison also hinted that the movie will require the presence of Tom Cruise as Maverick.
“There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”
As for the actor, during the London premiere of his recent movie “Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation”, Cruise exclaimed that a sequel to the 80s hit “would be fun”.
“It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets,” Cruise said.
Known to be doing his own stunts, the actor also added that he would want to shoot on a real jet rather than developing a computer- generated version, if “Top Gun 2” becomes a reality.
“It would have to be practical. I don’t want any CGI jets. I want to shoot it like how we shot the first one,” he added, quotes Reuters.
Meanwhile, “Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation” already got favorable reviews from different movie critics. Forbes noted some of them:
“I was delighted by this one end to end, and I plan on seeing it again in IMAX as soon as possible.” – Drew McWeeny (Hit Fix)
“Thanks to a sharp script that springs a real surprise or two and a pace that never slackens, ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’rates as the second-best of the numerous franchise titles of the summer, after ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’” –Todd Mcarthy (Hollywood Reporter)
“Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation” premieres on cinemas worldwide on July 31.
