The Melbourne Victory play the Shanghai SIPG in their Asian Champions League campaign at the Shanghai Stadium on Tuesday, April 19, starting 5 pm local time and 9:30 pm AEST.
According to the ACL sources, the Melbourne Victory suffered a 2-1 “heart-breaking” Hyundai A-League elimination final loss to Brisbane Roar, last Friday. But they have to put everything behind them and match-up with the ACL Group G toppers Shanghai SIPG. The Australian A-League team travelled to China this week and would be hoping to pull off a magical performance to seal the quarter-final spot.
Though the Victory play Gamba Osaka at home in two weeks, they would like to do the job now and may their way to the knock-out stages. The Herald Sun quoted defender Jason Geria as saying, “It’s not a free hit. We’d rather win this and have it locked in.”
“In the last campaign we got knocked out on goal difference. We don’t want to get in to that same situation.
“We’re three points ahead of third, but we can’t rely on that.
While we’re in that groove of playing a lot of games, we want to make the most of it and take maximum points to solidify our spot.”
The Victory beat the Chinese team 2-1 back in February but Shanghai came back strongly to win “the following three games to just need a point from Tuesday’s clash to be sure of a place in the last 16.”
A win would secure first place for the Australian team in the group standings as their Chinese Super League campaign has been satisfactory.
Our prediction : Melbourne Victory 2-1 Shanghai SPIG
