Six of the top 10 most liveable cities in the world are in Australia and Canada based on the latest Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Ranking. Out of 140 cities across the planet, Melbourne comes on top for the sixth year in a row.

Overall, Melbourne scored 97.5 out of 100, one basis point more than the 97.4 score of the second most liveable city, which is Vienna, Austria. Vancouver (97.3) and Toronto (97.2), Canada placed third and fourth, respectively.

Canada’s Calgary and Australia’s Adelaide and Perth round up the top seven. Sydney, which was last year’s top 7 most liveable city, now dropped out of the top 10 due to the city’s increased perceived threat of terrorism.

The cities were rated based on categories such as healthcare, stability, culture and environment, education as well as infrastructure. The report, however, did not judge each city’s cost of living.

Generally, the top ranked cities are part of wealthy countries, which also provide good health and education systems. These cities also tend to be of medium size with low population density apart from having high quality infrastructures.

Major global business centers like New York, Paris, London and Tokyo have not placed in the top 10 due to higher crime rates, congestion and public transportation problems. Despite this, the report asserts that these cities are still excellent business and finance hubs.

Instability, social unrest and fears over terrorism have also negatively impacted major cities and their livability ratings. According to experts, the past 12 months has seen the most significant amount of change to security.
