Magnum P.I. Returns: Gender Swap Role in TV Reboot

Magnum P.I.

Yet another reboot is about to take place. Moreover, it follows the gender-swapping trend sweeping Hollywood reboots. Hence, a woman takes charge of Magnum P.I. this time around.

However, it would not be just any woman to assume the iconic role made famous by Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck). No less than his daughter Lily would carry on the work at his Hawaiian PI firm. Thus, the combination of action and the tropical backdrop promises new adventures from the Magnum P.I. reboot.

The gender swap in role would follow the growing trend within Hollywood. Recently, news of Channing Tatum in the Splash remake as a merman seemed to excite everyone. Although their eagerness is likely brought on by images of him half-naked, with a merman’s tail, and flashing his killer smile. Thus, his gender-flipped role might end up a hit when it hits theaters.

Then again, not all gender-swapped reboots are as lucky. Criticism hit the Ghostbusters 2016 reboot early on. Fans of the original eighties franchise frowned upon the casting of female leads. Their opposition extended to nearly every aspect of the film from its trailers to the soundtrack. Hence, the chances of a sequel now seem unlikely.

Thus, it begs to ask how the returning Magnum P.I. would fare. However, fans might see the logic behind the decision of showrunners, i.e. Eva Longoria, John Rogers, Ben Spector and Jennifer Court, to do so. It remains unknown if Tom Selleck would come onboard for the reboot. His inclusion could make it considerably appealing to many.

“We knew no one could replace the iconic role of Thomas Magnum, so John decided to make the reboot a sequel and continue the adventure of a Magnum — his daughter, who was established in the original series,” Deadline quoted Longoria and Spector.

Lily, whose nickname is Tommy, is the daughter of Thomas Magnum. A botched spy operation cut short her naval career. Thus, she returns to Hawaii to take over her father’s firm.
