One of the best ways to lose weight is actually cheap and can easily be found in your house – water.
A new study found that drinking a glass of water – at least 16 ounces – before a meal can help you shed some extra pounds, Time magazine wrote.
Researchers from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom studied 84 obese adults for 12 weeks. They were divided into two groups. One was told to take 16 ounces of water half an hour before their meals, while the other group was told to imagine their stomachs were full before eating.
Only tap water was allowed in the research. Sparkling water, fizzy drinks or sweetened drinks were all banned, the Daily Mail noted.
The study found that the group that consumed a glass of water before meals lost about three pounds than the group that did not.
In addition, researchers also found that the subjects who drank more, lose more weight too. They lost about 4.3 kg, or 9.4 pounds over the course of the experiment compared to those who only preloaded once, or not at all.
Study author Dr. Amanda Daley of the University of Birmingham said, “That’s about what you get from going to Weight Watchers for 12 weeks. That’s a real success.”
Daley explained drinking a couple glasses of water 30 minutes before a meal makes a person feel fuller, which in turn shape his decision on what to eat.
Dr. Helen Parretti of the University of Birmingham added: “The beauty of these findings is in the simplicity. Just drinking a pint of water, three times a day, before your main meals may help reduce your weight.”
Researchers said their findings could be “hugely beneficial”, and could easily be promoted by doctors and other health practitioners, the Daily Mail wrote.
The study was published in the journal Obesity.
