In a recent shocking incident, an American woman was murdered while two other Australians were left wounded in a stabbing attack in Central London. The accused is reportedly a 19-year-old Norwegian national of Somali origin. The real reason behind the attack “increasingly points to mental health issues,” though cops are also considering the terror attack angle.
The victim has been identified as Darlene Horton, 64, who was the wife of a US-based psychology professor. The two other victims were an Australian man, 40, and a woman, 23. Both suffered serious injuries in the attack and were later sent to a London hospital.
Five more people were injured in the attack, which includes an American man who had been stabbed in the chest, an Israeli woman stabbed in her bicep and the two Australians, reported by The Guardian. According to the cops, the incident was probably a case of “spontaneous” knife attack ” on strangers selected at random.” Though they are considering the terrorism-related angle, nothing has been confirmed as of now.
“So far we have found no evidence of radicalization or anything that would suggest the man in our custody was motivated by terrorism. Whilst the investigation is not yet complete, all of the work that we have done so far increasingly points to this tragic incident as having been triggered by mental health issues,” Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley told The Sydney Morning Herald.
The 19-year-old accused has been reportedly arrested by the police just within a few minutes after the incident occurred. London Mayor Sadiq Khan, on the other hand, has called for the public to remain ‘calm and vigilant’. “I urge all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant. Please report anything suspicious to the police. We all have a vital role to play as eyes and ears for our police and security services and in helping to ensure London is protected,” he told the press.
