The Latest on the Gilmore Girls Reboot

Gilmore Girls

Gilmore Girls fans and fanatics were today given another reason to rejoice at the official addition of three more original cast members for Gilmore Girls: Seasons. The Netflix reboot of the 2000-2007 show, originally aired on the now-defunct network The CW, started filming last week. Since then, it has been formally announced that Liza Weil, Yanic Truesdale and Matt Czuchry will rejoin the cast in their former roles as Paris, Michel and Logan respectively.

Earlier in the week, Gilmore Girls star Kelly Bishop, who plays Emily Gilmore, told TV Line that series creator and writer Amy Sherman-Palladino had written Paris into the revival scripts. However, at the time, Liza Weil — who is currently a series regular on ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder — had not officially closed a deal to return. “Paris is a hoot,” Bishop said of one of Rory Gilmore’s best friends, Paris Gellar. “It’s unbelievable what Amy has written for Paris. People are going to have so much fun with it.”

On Saturday, Weil herself announced at the aTVfest in Atlanta that Paris would indeed be part of the four-episode continuation, which started shooting on Tuesday in Los Angeles. TV Line reports that Weil will be featured in two of the four ninety-minute installments. Despite this good news however, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is still “in shock” from the loss of the one person who definitely won’t be back: the late Edward Hermann, who played Rory’s grandfather Richard Gilmore during the show’s original seven seasons.

“Ed’s dying [in 2014] was so f—ed up,” laments Sherman-Palladino “It was unexpected. He didn’t really let anyone know he was sick. He was a very proud dude. So none of us really got to say goodbye to him. It was very hard, especially for Lauren [Graham] and Alexis [Bledel]. He was like their other father.” Incorporating the veteran actor’s passing into the four-part continuation was never a question, insists Sherman-Palladino. “He was part of us, and he’s gone,” she says, “You couldn’t just say, ‘Oh, Richard died peacefully in his sleep, and now we’re going to go to the cherry-picking festival.’ It’s painful. I still choke up when I talk about it, because I wasn’t prepared for it.”

Also returning is Matt Czuchry, who played Rory’s final love interest Logan Huntzberger. According to Sherman-Palladino, Rory is “single but dating” during Gilmore Girls: Seasons.

Yanic Truesdale, better known to Gilmore Girls fans as Stars Hollow’s sassy concierge, is also set to return as Michel. One week after confirming his return to the beloved series, Truesdale on Friday tweeted the first on-set photo from the Gilmore Girls reunion.

Gilmore Girls: Seasons is rumoured to air before the end of 2016.
