It was a bittersweet Wednesday evening for Real Madrid CF. The team only managed a draw against Villarreal, missing the chance to set a new 17-match winning streak record in the history of the Spanish La Liga. However, they now find themselves at the top of the La Liga table.

Sergio Ramos played both the villain and the hero of the match.

According to the match report by BBC, he gave away a penalty when he used his hand to block a shot from the opponents. While this tactic worked against Espanyol in their last La Liga fixture, the trick didn’t work twice in a row. Real Madrid found themselves trailing at the end of the half after Villarreal easily converted the penalty shot.

Three minutes after the start of the second half, Ramos immediately redeemed himself. He powered a header through to the back of the net and leveled the score. The rest of the team needed to step up, but despite mounting pressure on the Villarreal side, Real Madrid failed to score the winner. The triumvirate of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema failed to make magic happen.

The draw meant that Real Madrid missed out on making a new 17-match record for winning the most number of games in a row. They are currently tied with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona squad from 2010-11, which also won 16 straight games.

Despite the disappointing failure to claim their 17th victory, the team sits on top of the La Liga standings.

With 13 points, Real Madrid leads Sevilla by two points. Meanwhile, bitter rivals FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also only managed to draw against each other. Barcelona now lies in third place with 10 points while Atletico is in fourth place with 9 points. Villarreal, Las Palmas and Athletic Bilbao also have 9 points on the board.
