Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has slammed former Barcelona Player Xavi Hernandez for comments that he made last week. When asked about the latter’s claim that only Real Madrid fans think that Ronaldo is better than Messi, the Portuguese star quickly made it clear that he thinks Xavi’s comments are irrelevant.
“I am the most searched player on the the internet,” said Ronaldo, in a follow-up interview done by Cadena Ser. “Why should I care what Xavi says? Xavi plays in Qatar–he has won everything, the World Cup, Euros, but he’s never won the Ballon D’Or,” he said. He also made it clear that after winning the Ballon D’Or 3 times, he only sees it as a privilege and does not care about negative comments.
Last week, Xavi hit headlines after he compared Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi during an interview with El Larguero. “Cristiano is an extraordinary footballer,” he started. However, his positive comment quickly turned sour, when he made the comparison with his former Barcelona teammate.
“His problem is that there is another, who is practically the best footballer in history,” said Xavi, clearly referring to Messi. He said that anyone who likes football knows this, except if you are rooting for Real Madrid.
Cristiano Ronaldo showed off some of the reasons why he has just been named the best player in Europe. After returning from an extended injury break, he scored in his debut match for Real Madrid within the first six minutes. He opened the scoring, which led to an emphatic 5-2 win against Osasuna in a Spanish La Liga match.
Xavi meanwhile, has been playing for Al Sadd in Qatar. He moved to the Middle Eastern team last year, after spending his entire career in Barcelona. He is also part of the Spanish National team which won back to back European Championship titles, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
