Spanish La Liga title holders FC Barcelona began their 2016/17 campaign with a bang. They opened their title defense with a 6-2 victory against Real Betis, thanks to superb performances by Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Arda Turan.

According to the match report by BBC, Turan opened the scoring in the sixth minute of the match. Real Betis kept it level by scoring an equalizer in the 21st minute. Ruben Castro scored from an impressive free-kick, and it looked like it was going to be an even match.  However, Argentine superstar Lionel Messi pushed Barcelona back ahead on the 37th minute. Before the first half ended, Luis Suarez put his name up on the scoreboard in his first of three goals for the night.

Betis needed to start scoring again if they were going to stay in contention but the Catalan giants had other plans. Suarez and Messi scored back-to-back goals in the second half. They found the back of the net just one minute apart in the 56th and 57th minute. Suarez put the final nail in the coffin for Real Betis when he completed his hat trick on the 82nd minute. Betis tried to keep their heads afloat with another goal in the closing minutes, but a 6-2 scoreline proved Barcelona’s dominance.

FC Barcelona have claimed their first three points of the season, but they still have a long way to go to defend their La Liga title. Meanwhile, rivals Real Madrid have kept themselves in pace by also claiming their first victory of the season against Real Sociedad. They managed to secure three points through a dominant 3-0 victory away from home.

While Barcelona and Real Madrid opened their season with dominant wins, Atletico Madrid failed to stamp their authority over newly promoted side Alaves. They only managed to take home one point from a 1-1 draw.
