The official trailer of “Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8” has been released yesterday and has finally revealed the launch date. It may not be the “Kingdom Hearts 3” (KH3) that fans have been waiting for, but this game serves as a lead-in for KH3.

It has been 10 years since the release of “Kingdom Hearts 2” for the PlayStation 2 and since then, fans have been wanting a sequel. Within those 10 years, Square Enix has been releasing spin-off games and having an HD remake of them.

“Kingdom Heart HD 2.8” is the last spin-off before the much anticipated KH3.

The trailer that was released yesterday featured scenes from previous titles, namely: “Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance”, “Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover” and “Birth by Sleep 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage”. According to Polygon, all these titles were made to better understand the whole timeline of “Kingdom Hearts”. These titles serves as stepping stones to the much anticipated KH3.

The “Kingdom Hearts” franchise is known to have confusing titles which would then also confuse gamers of its story line.

Gamerant mentions that “Kingdom Hearts” director, Tetsuya Nomura came up with “Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8” as a way of connecting the story lines of the aforementioned titles. “Dream Drop Distance”, he says, is 2.6 of the main “Kingdom Hearts” story line. “Back Cover” and “Birth By Sleep” are 0.0 (meaning that this was where the Kingdom Hearts timeline started) and 0.2, respectively. Doing the math, Nomura arrived at 2.8.

Players will control a character named Aqua as she travels to at least one other Disney world which will give players a sort of a demo to KH3. “Birth by Sleep” was originally designed to show gamers what the gameplay of KH3 would be like on the PlayStation 4.

“Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue” will be released on December  for the PlayStation 4. Haven’t watched the trailer yet? View it here.
