Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian have arrived in Cuba together with the film crew of Keeping Up With the Kardashians to document the siblings’ overseas escapade. While the Kardashian-Jenner clan is not exactly the most well-liked people on the planet, it appears that Cubans are particularly annoyed by having the Kardashian in Cuba.
The trio did their usual routine—got glammed up, puckered up for photos and stirred some controversy. In one Instagram photo, Khloe was seen posing in front of a wall where the word “Fidel” was engraved. CNN reports this sparked outrage among Cubans who slammed the KUWTK star for being insensitive to the people who suffered under Fidel Castro’s regime.
Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who is of Cuban descent, expressed her disappointment at the reality show stars’ presence in Cuba.
“I know it’s cool for celebrities to go to Cuba, but the Cuban people don’t experience the glamorous Havana that is featured on social media,” Ros-Lehtinen tells People. “Far from photo shoots and fruity drinks, everyday Cubans experience a different, sad reality. Now, the Kardashians are parachuting into the island to tape their vapid TV show — Haven’t the Cuban people suffered enough?”
There are also concerns that the reality in Cuba will not be properly depicted in the show. The state is financially struggling, and many have found it offensive for the Kardashians to bring their idea of glamour and luxury just for the benefit of their TV show.
The Kardashians are used to having a horde of paparazzi following them around or fans trying to take a photo of them on the streets. But the Cubans couldn’t care less about the starlets, and there was no fanfare of sorts as the trio gallivanted around the cobbled streets of Havana surrounded by bodyguards.
Khloe, Kim and Kourtney are joined by Kim’s husband Kanye West and daughter North.
The Kardashian in Cuba adventures will be featured in the latest season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
