Gilas Pilipinas will be facing its Asian rivals, Iran, today at 1 pm (Local Time). The Philippine National Basketball team is looking to drop Iran in the first place by giving it its second loss.
According to Bleacher Report, today’s game have the biggest implications in the rankings of the William Jones Cup 2015, calling it the “tournament’s most important matchup to date.”
Iran sits atop the rankings with a 4-1 record and a +72 point differential, Russia is at second with 4-1 and a +41 PD. Should Gilas Pilipinas win today, they will sit at 4-1 with Iran dropping to 4-2.
The Philippines is riding the waves of a strong performance against Japan, outscoring them 75-60.
Gilas is led by its breakout star Terrence Romeo who has performed impressively during the past 4 games and leading the team with 16 points against Japan. So far, the guard places fifth in overall points per game with 17.0.
Teammates Jason William is also posting great numbers, aside from his scoring he also ranks fourth overall in Assists with 4.0 per game. Donaldo Hontiveros is fifth in steals with 2.5 per game.
As for Iran, the team will coming from a big loss to USA, 81-66. The loss comes as a big surprise to many given the team’s impressive record. The USA team was able to control the offense as well as the defense, allowing only two Iranians to score in double figures, notes Bleacher Report.
USA, on the hand, had Calvin Warner scoring 34 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Marquin Chandler added a double-double too, 10 points and 10 rebounds, to seal the upset.
With Gilas Pilipinas and Iran coming from different situations, it will be very interesting to see how the two match up on court.
