Among the 16 dead in the Ivory Coast massacre was a 5-year-old boy who knelt down and pleaded for his life during the terror attack. He was shot dead despite his pleas.
The beach resort which is popular with western tourists was attacked by heavily armed Islamist terrorists. Around 16 people were killed which includes the 5-year-old-boy and four European tourists. The Jihadis attacked three luxury hotels. The gunmen were said to have come to the beach resort by fishing boat.
Six gunmen wearing balaclavas started shooting at the people on the beach indiscriminately while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” reported news.com.au. Witnesses said that the attackers used Kalashnikov assault rifles and hand grenades. The attack lasted for three hours.
They mercilessly killed a child. A witness informed, “They killed a child despite him kneeling down and begging. They shot a woman in the chest…They’ve killed innocent people.”
Three Special Forces soldiers were also gunned down reported Mail Online.
Ivory Coast Interior Minister Hamed Bakayoko said that only three of the terrorists were killed. Security forces and Ivorian Red Cross dragged the dead bodies from the blood-stained sand.
Initially, it was reported that the terrorists were targeting a US delegation led by Assistant Secretary of Commerce Marcus Jadotte. However, the American embassy in Abidjan informed that there was no evidence that US citizens were targeted.
This was the third attack in the recent months on a West African tourist hot spot. In November last year, more than a dozen were killed in Malian in a terrorist attack.
The Burkinabe President Roch Kabore released a statement, in which he condemned the terrorist attacks and also offered condolences to the families of the victims. He also stated that together they would come to a solution to end terrorism.
Raffaello Pantucci, director of international security studies at the Royal United Services Institute think-tank in London, stated, “Attacking the evil Westerner is one of their prime intentions and goals. Hitting a resort like this hits a number of goals.”
He added that it undermined the local government as tourism is a big driver of the local economy. Another reason for the attack, according to him, was the Westerners; attacking the place where there were foreigners would give them more media coverage.
