After the final episode of Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 aired, actress Sara Ramirez confirmed that it’s “a wrap” for her as the show’s Dr. Callie Torres. Although Ramirez had dropped a tell-tale sign on Twitter about her looming exit, many were shocked by her announcement including Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes.
At the New York Magazine’s Vulture Festival on May 22, Sunday Shonda Rhimes revealed that she found out about Ramirez’s departure three days before she broke the news. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes explained that the actress’ departure after 10 years on the medical drama “was different because it wasn’t a big, planned thing.”
“I had a different plan going and Sara came and said, ‘I really need to take this break,’” Rhimes said. “I was sort of lucky that we had shot the end of the season with her going to New York.”
There is no bad blood between Ramirez and Rhimes and the latter respects the actress’ decision even though her exit may have caught the Grey’s Anatomy showrunner off guard.
She continued that it felt good that they were able to close Ramirez’s story with her character leaving for New York. Giving Ramirez her much-deserved break was something Rhimes did out of love for the 40-year-old actress. “I want to do everything for her,” Rhimes added.
Rhimes explained that she is understanding and respectful of actors’ desires to move on to something new.
A lot of actor and actresses on the show have come and go, even original Grey’s Anatomy cast members such as Patrick Dempsey and Sandra Oh have left the series earlier. On the other hand, Ramirez harboured no hard feelings as she bowed out of the show.
“I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC,” Ramirez said in a tweet, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. “Shonda’s been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations!”
Sara Ramirez first appeared as Dr. Callie Torres in Grey’s Anatomy Season 2.
